At 6:30 am, a local resident noticed smoke as he passed the intersection of Second Street and Hancock Avenue on his way to work and called 911. A visitor at the nearby campground said he heard an explosion, "a boom, like a gas explosion." The Nickerson Inn, which would have been 93 years old in July, was gutted by fire during a heavy rainstorm. The inn was unoccupied at the time. Firefighters from Pentwater, Hart, Shelby, Crystal Valley, Riverton and Pere Marquette fought the blaze. The Red Cross and Oceana EMS assisted firefighters.

An early morning fire in Golden Township destroyed the garage and damaged a portion of the attached home on Sunday. Vacationers camping nearby noticed fire in the garage while the owners were away.
